Pulsar Stone

Sculpture

Material: gypsum, propylene, LED light, and Arduino control panel

The frequency of a light’s nuclear scintillation is 1.337 seconds. It is also the cycle of the first pulsar discovered by human beings.

There is a strong sense in which all of us are made of stars; all of us were nuclear waste, because every atom that makes up the human body has floated in the universe.

The pulsar appears to still be breathing, but it is actually in a state of equilibrium after the death of a star. This is analogous to our lives, cycling between bright and dark (and the uncertainty about the end, which may be the ultimate light).
